How to Choose the Right Frame Colour
Share
The frame is not just a border around your artwork — it is part of the artwork's relationship with your room. The wrong frame colour can disconnect a beautiful canvas from its surroundings; the right one makes the whole space feel considered and complete. Here is how to choose well.
Start with Your Wall Colour
Your wall colour is the first reference point. As a general rule, frames should either contrast with the wall (a black frame on a white wall, a white frame on a dark wall) or belong to the same warm or cool family (a natural wood frame on a warm cream wall, a gold frame on a warm ochre wall). Avoid frames that are too close in tone to the wall — they cause the artwork to disappear.
Match the Frame to Your Furniture
Look at the dominant materials in your room. If your furniture is mostly warm timber, a natural wood or gold frame will feel cohesive. If your furniture is dark charcoal or black metal, a black frame will carry the same visual weight. White frames are the most neutral and work in almost any environment.
Frame Colours and What They Suit
• Black: Clean, graphic, and contemporary. Works in modern, industrial, and Scandinavian interiors. Adds definition and sharpens the edges of any artwork. A safe choice for abstract and geometric pieces.
• White: Fresh, airy, and versatile. Suits coastal, Scandi, and minimalist interiors. Makes the artwork feel light and unencumbered. Works especially well with botanical prints and soft watercolour-style canvases.
• Natural Wood: Warm, organic, and grounding. Suits transitional, tropical contemporary, and rustic interiors — the most common interior style in Filipino homes. Works with almost any artwork style.
• Gold: Luxurious and warm. Suits traditional, maximalist, and formal interiors. Also works beautifully in modern spaces as a single accent. Pairs especially well with abstract metallics, dark backgrounds, and Skye's original works.
• Silver: Cool and sleek. Suits modern, minimalist, and industrial interiors. Less common but very effective in rooms with cool grey or blue tones.
When in Doubt, Match the Artwork
If your room is neutral and you are unsure, let the artwork lead. A canvas with warm gold tones calls for a gold or natural wood frame. A cool blue abstract calls for black, white, or silver. A warm terracotta composition pairs beautifully with natural wood.
