How to Create a Gallery Wall with Canvas Wall Art

A gallery wall is one of the most impactful things you can do with a blank wall. Done well, it tells a story, reflects your personality, and transforms an empty space into a captivating focal point. Here's how to create one with confidence.

Step 1: Gather Your Collection

Assemble the canvas pieces you want to include. Look at them together and consider how their styles, sizes, and colour palettes interact. A cohesive gallery wall does not mean everything has to match — it means the pieces feel intentional together.

Step 2: Choose Your Wall

Common locations include: above a sofa, along a hallway, on a staircase landing, or above a headboard. The wall's size and natural traffic will influence the gallery's scale and impact.

Step 3: Choose a Layout Style

•       Grid: Equal-sized pieces with consistent spacing. Clean, modern, suits minimalist interiors.

•       Salon Wall: Mixed sizes hung close together in an organic arrangement. Dynamic, eclectic, suits maximalist or traditional spaces.

•       Symmetrical: Pieces mirrored on either side of a central work. Formal and balanced.

•       Asymmetrical: A more relaxed, creative arrangement mixing sizes freely. Casually sophisticated.

Step 4: Plan the Spacing

Aim for 1 to 2 inches of space between each piece for a cohesive look. Use a measuring tape to maintain consistency.

Step 5: Create Paper Templates

Before hammering a single nail, trace each canvas onto craft paper or newspaper and cut out the templates. Tape them to the wall with painter's tape and live with the arrangement for a day. Adjust until it feels right.

Step 6: Hang the Artwork

Working from the centre outward, hang each piece using a level to keep everything straight. Check spacing and alignment as you go.

Step 7: Add Personal Touches

Once the canvases are up, consider layering in small shelves, framed photos, decorative objects, or a wall-mounted clock to give the gallery depth and personality.

Step back and enjoy. A well-curated gallery wall is one of the most personal and rewarding decor projects you can do in your home.
