How to Create a Staircase Gallery Wall

Staircase walls are some of the most overlooked spaces in a home — and some of the most rewarding to transform. A well-executed staircase gallery wall draws the eye upward, creates visual interest throughout the entire ascent, and turns a purely functional space into one of the most memorable parts of your home.

Step 1: Decide on a Theme

Before gathering artwork, decide on the overall feel you want: family photos, a curated art collection, a mix of both, or a combination of artwork and decorative objects like mirrors or shelves.

Step 2: Gather Your Art and Objects

Collect everything you plan to include — canvases, framed photos, mirrors, decorative plates, or small shelves. Lay them out on the floor first to experiment with arrangements.

Step 3: Create Paper Templates

Trace each item onto craft paper and cut out the templates. This is especially important for a staircase wall, where the angles and heights are more complex than a flat wall.

Step 4: Find Your Centre Line

On a staircase, the gallery typically follows the angle of the staircase itself. Draw a light pencil line parallel to the stair angle at mid-height — this becomes your visual guide for placing the templates.

Step 5: Tape and Adjust

Tape your paper templates to the wall, following the staircase angle. Live with the arrangement for a day before committing. The key on staircase walls is maintaining even spacing between pieces as they ascend — this is what creates the flowing, intentional look.

Step 6: Start with the Centrepiece

Identify the visual anchor of your gallery — usually the largest or most striking piece. Hang this first, then build outward and upward around it.

Step 7: Hang and Level

Work your way up the staircase, hanging each piece and checking it with a level. On staircase walls, you'll want each individual piece to be level even as the overall arrangement follows the angle of the stairs.

Step 8: Step Back and Adjust

View the finished wall from the bottom of the staircase. Make any final adjustments to spacing or alignment.

A staircase gallery wall is a project that rewards patience. Take your time with the planning stage and the execution will feel effortless.
