How to Care for and Clean Your Canvas Wall Art
Share
Canvas wall art is a long-term investment in your home's beauty. In the Philippines, where humidity and heat are year-round concerns, a little regular care goes a long way toward keeping your artwork vibrant for years to come.
Understanding Your Canvas
Canvas is typically made from cotton or linen stretched over a wooden frame. In our tropical climate, two things to watch out for are moisture (which can cause mould and warping) and direct sunlight (which causes colours to fade over time).
Preventing Damage
• Avoid direct sunlight: Hang canvas art away from windows with direct sun exposure, or use UV-filtering curtains in sun-facing rooms.
• Manage humidity: Consider running an air conditioner or dehumidifier in rooms where your artwork is displayed. Keep artwork away from damp walls, bathrooms, or areas prone to condensation.
Regular Dusting
The most important routine step is regular, gentle dusting. Use a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Work from the top of the canvas downward to prevent dust from resettling on cleaned areas. Do this every few weeks.
Spot Cleaning Stains
• Start with a dry cloth to lift any surface residue without spreading it.
• For light stains, dampen a clean cloth with distilled water (not tap water, which can leave mineral deposits) and gently blot — do not rub.
• For stubborn stains, add one or two drops of mild, pH-neutral liquid soap to distilled water. Dampen a cloth with the solution and blot gently. Follow with a clean damp cloth to remove soap residue, then blot dry.
• Never saturate the canvas. It should be damp, not wet.
What to Avoid
• Harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive cleaners
• Rubbing or scrubbing motions
• Spraying liquid directly onto the canvas
When to Call a Professional
For valuable, antique, or heavily soiled pieces, consult a professional art conservator. They have the tools and expertise to clean and restore artwork safely.
With a little consistent care, your canvas wall art will remain a beautiful part of your home for many years.
