How to Hang Framed Canvas Wall Art

Hanging canvas wall art can feel daunting, but with the right preparation it is a straightforward process. Here's how to do it properly.

What You'll Need

•       Your canvas wall art

•       Stud finder or wall anchor kit

•       Pencil and measuring tape

•       Level

•       Screwdriver or drill

•       Wall hooks or brackets

•       Hammer (if needed)

Step 1: Choose the Right Location

Decide where you want to hang your artwork. A good rule of thumb is eye level — typically 57 to 60 inches from the floor to the centre of the piece. Consider the room's natural light, existing furniture, and how the artwork will anchor the space.

Step 2: Measure and Mark

Measure the width of your canvas and find its centre point. Lightly mark this on the wall with a pencil.

Step 3: Find Wall Anchors or Studs

•       Drywall: Use wall anchors. Locate a suitable anchoring spot level with your centre mark, drill holes slightly smaller than the anchors, tap the anchors flush, then attach hooks or brackets with screws.

•       Concrete or hollow block walls (common in Philippine homes): Use concrete anchors or rawl plugs. Drill into the wall, insert the plug, and drive the screw in firmly.

•       Wooden studs: Locate studs using a stud finder or by tapping the wall for a solid sound. Drive screws directly into the stud for maximum support.

Step 4: Hang the Canvas

Attach any hanging hardware (wire or D-rings) to the back of the artwork if not already in place. Hang the canvas on the hooks or brackets and use a level to confirm it's straight. Adjust as needed.

Step 5: Final Adjustments

Step back and assess. Check that the piece is centred, level, and at the right height. Make small adjustments until you are satisfied.

Your canvas is ready to be enjoyed. Properly hung artwork not only looks better — it also protects both the piece and your wall over time.
