How to Measure Your Wall Before Ordering Canvas Art

One of the most common mistakes when ordering canvas wall art is getting the size wrong. Too small and the artwork looks lost; too large and it overwhelms the room. A few minutes of careful measuring before you order saves a lot of regret afterward. Here is how to do it properly.

What You Will Need

•       A measuring tape

•       Pencil and paper (or your phone notes)

•       A helper (optional but useful for larger walls)

Step 1: Measure the Full Wall

Measure the full width and height of the wall where you plan to hang the artwork. Note both measurements down. This gives you the total available space to work with.

Step 2: Identify the Anchor Furniture

Most canvas art is hung above a piece of furniture — a sofa, bed, console table, or sideboard. Measure the width of that furniture piece. This is your primary guide for the artwork's width.

Step 3: Apply the Two-Thirds Rule

A canvas hung above furniture should be approximately two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. For example:

•       Sofa 200 cm wide — aim for canvas width of 130 to 140 cm (or a diptych/triptych that spans this width collectively)

•       Queen bed 150 cm wide — aim for canvas width of 100 to 120 cm

•       Console table 120 cm wide — aim for canvas width of 80 to 90 cm

Step 4: Consider the Ceiling Height

In rooms with high ceilings (10 feet or more), a taller canvas helps fill the vertical space and draws the eye upward. In standard-height rooms (8 to 9 feet), a wider canvas is usually more balanced than a very tall one.

Step 5: Account for the Gap Above Furniture

Leave a gap of 20 to 30 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame. This anchors the artwork visually to the furniture below it without feeling disconnected or floating too high on the wall.

Step 6: Choose Your Size

With your measurements in hand, choose from our standard sizes or contact us to discuss a custom size:

•       Small: 50x70 cm

•       Medium: 60x90 cm

•       Large: 70x100 cm and 85x125 cm

•       Square: 80x80 cm and 100x100 cm

If none of these fit your specific wall, message us — we accommodate custom sizes wherever possible.
